Schools “Try Like Terry” and Raise Over $21K

Lakehead Public Schools is celebrating the fundraising efforts of students and staff in raising over $21,000 in the 2021 Terry Fox School Run. This month, the Terry Fox Foundation has thanked Lakehead Public Schools in an official letter for having embodied the nonprofit organization’s 2021 motto of “Try Like Terry”.
The Lakehead Public Schools 2021 Terry Fox School Run fundraiser saw 20 schools participate with eight schools each raising into the thousands. Westmount Public School took first place with over $4K raised, Westgate CVI took second place with over $3K, and Nor’wester View Public School and École Elsie MacGill Public School took third and fourth places with over $2K raised per school. École Gron Morgan Public School, Woodcrest Public School, McKenzie Public School, and Crestview Public School each raised four figures as well.
Since the onset of Terry Fox School fundraisers in 1981, Lakehead Public Schools has raised nearly $200K in support of cancer research. We are pleased to announce that the school that has raised the largest amount in Lakehead Public Schools’ 41-year history of fundraising for The Terry Fox Foundation is Armstrong Public School with nearly $30K raised in total.
“Terry Fox continues to be a tremendous inspiration in Thunder Bay. It is important to preserve his legacy by teaching students about the Marathon of Hope, the naming of the Terry Fox Courage Highway, and the importance of not giving up. Raising funds in a group effort strengthens a school’s sense of community as students and staff work together in the hopes of helping researchers get one step closer to finding a cure for cancer,” said Ian MacRae, director of education.
The 2021 Terry Fox School Run official emblem was designed by the Terry Fox Foundation to represent the traditional Métis floral beading of the prairie crocus of Manitoba and the wild prairie rose of North Dakota; two areas upon which Terry Fox’s ancestors lived. The emblem can be found on the familiar blue T-shirts worn in schools all over Canada representing the unending respect for a national hero and symbol of courage.
